Dear ROMS families,

It hardly seems possible that we are already into the month of November! With the rainy weather here, the days getting shorter and report card time approaching, we are very focused on academics right now at school. This is a good time to check in with your child about how they are doing at school and to touch base with your child’s teachers if you have concerns. You can support your child at home by ensuring they get to bed at a reasonable time, removing devices from their bedroom and setting aside a daily time for homework. We find that as the days get shorter, students are less active resulting in more time playing video games or on their devices. We see the impact of this at school as social media drama spills over from home to school and students are less able to focus when they are tired. We appreciate your effort to support healthy sleep habits and safe on-line behaviour as we know it makes for happier and more successful learners!

A couple of recent highlights:

  •  Gr 6 Immunizations  - Our Gr 6 students might not agree that this was a highlight (as some of them had three shots last week!) but we are very proud of how smoothly the process went. Our counselling team, our admin team and two support dogs worked with a team of public health nurses to make the process as painless as possible.

  •  Halloween - Our students and staff had a great day on Friday!  It was nice to celebrate Halloween as a school community and there were a lot of fun class/cohort-based activities. A big thank you to our Gr 8 leadership team who planned a COVID-friendly costume contest for the school.

Coming Up:

  • Interim Week (Nov 2-6) - this week is Interim Week at ROMS.  Classroom teachers will either be sending home a paper interim report or making contact via email/phone. For further info about reporting in SD#63 click here Reporting Information

  • ROMS Remembrance Day Assembly Video - as we are unable to have a school-wide assembly this year, we have created a video featuring ROMS students (drama, band, poetry readings, etc).  The entire school will watch the video at the same time in their classrooms on Tues, Nov 10 from 10:30-11.

  • Pro-D Day Nov 20 - students get to stay home while our staff continues to learn about Trauma-Informed Practice.

  • Report Cards - coming home on Thursday, December 17th.

A few other important topics:

  • Weather - fall is definitely upon us. Please ensure that your child has a water-proof rain jacket for school. We will be going outside at recess and lunchtime regardless of the weather.  Also, we are keeping the temperature inside the school a little cooler than normal to reduce any possible airborne concentrations of Covid19 resulting in a reduced risk of transmission through the air in our HVAC systems.  Please encourage your child to dress in layers throughout the fall/winter months.

  • Masks - Our students are doing a great job with mask-wearing.  Thank you for your help with this by ensuring they leave the house with a mask every day and they have a few extras tucked away in their backpack for emergencies.

  • Locks/Lockers - everyone has a locker now and we have staggered times during the day for locker visits.

  • Daily Health Check - thank you for your diligence in continuing to do this Health Check each morning before sending your child to school.

  • ROMS PAC - the next PAC meeting is on Wed, Nov 18 at  7pm. The meeting will be virtual - you will find the meeting invite on the ROMS PAC website.

    • Dielman’s - this fundraiser is now complete

    • Purdys -  online orders only until Nov 6

    • Gr 8 Hoodies - The final date to receive orders has been extended to Nov 12 - please send in your order and $  to your child’s HR teacher

    • Thrifty’s Smile Cards - Every Gr 6 family should have received a card this week - Gr 7 and 8 families, contact the office if you’d like a card

    • Country Grocer Receipts - Each division has an envelope, please send your receipts to your child's homeroom teacher (the PAC receives money based on the amount you spend)

    • Donations to PAC - thank you to our ROMS families who provided a donation to support the many wonderful things that our PAC provides for our staff and students at ROMS. If you have not donated yet, but would still like to, please send a cheque to the office - any amount is appreciated. So far we have collected $2300.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate these challenging times.
