Morning Radio News @ 9:05 am


Chess Club:
Play chess today at lunch recess in Mr Azim's room.  All grades and skill levels welcome!


Drama Club:
The entire cast of drama play is asked to meet today at advisory in the drama room. Bring your lunch.  See Ms Noel or Ms Buxcey if you have any questions.


Learning Commons: We now have a second bar code scanner in the LC, which will make signing out books much, much faster. Students must bring their picture ID with them. To help students get in the habit, starting tomorrow, and for the next two weeks, a winning number will be announced daily, and every student who signs out a book with their picture ID wins a prize! Tomorrow, every FIFTH student who uses their picture ID to sign out a book will be the winner. The winning number will change from day to day, though, so be listening to these morning announcements for the new number.


Math Challengers:
The next math challengers practice session is tomorrow at 1:15 in Miss Cottier's room.  Please bring your booklet, a calculator, and a pencil.  New members welcome.


ROMS TV News:
Next week we'll be having a new ROMS TV crew start their two-week stint, and so they need to come to the Learning Commons at 11 am. today to learn how to do their new jobs. Would teachers please release Mikyla B., 6-5, Anika K., M-6, and Larkyn, 6-2 at 11 (block 2). We also need teachers, please, to release Liam T., M-3, Danyn F., M-1, and Cohen W., M-8 to come to their regularly-scheduled roles. Thanks!


Popcorn: On sale at morning recess at the canteen. $1.50 per bag.


Canteen Thursday: On sale at recess tomorrow -chocolate chip cookies, mac & cheese & ice tea.


ROMS SPORTS:


Volleyball:

This week's practice schedule for all teams has been posted on the Royal Oak Athletics web page, and game schedules and league rules can be found at lowerislandschoolsports.ca. Please have a look to see when your team is practicing and playing this week. Players are reminded to confirm transportation arrangements to away game in advance and be able to tell their coach who is driving them to the game and home.

Mr. Sparanese's grade 7 girls team at Cedar Hill

Coach Jim Smyth's grade 8 girls team at Arbutus

Coach Chris Yue's team here at ROMS.


Gr 6/7 Intra Murals:
Grade 6/7 Green Floor vs Blue Floor Intramural Dungeonball series will run today in the gym at lunch. Mr. Menzies will be around today to notify classes that are set to play today. The current score in the series is 1 - 0 for the Green floor. Let's see if the blue floor can tie the series up today!

Bus Registration: As of February 1st the School District 63 transportation department will no longer be accepting bus registrations for the 2017-18 school year. Please contact the Transportation Department at 250-652-7343 if you have any questions.

ROMS PAC NEWS:


PAC Meeting: Please join us at the next PAC General Meeting on Thursday, February 15 as Claremont School Counsellors will be there to provide information on the Grade 8 transition process, course selection and programs available at Claremont. Come, ask your questions and stay informed.


Grade 8 Farewell Bake Sale on February 14th

We are asking for grade 8 families to provide items to sell at a bake sale

cookies, cupcakes, or even chocolate strawberries!

* All proceeds are for the final farewell party.

Thrifty Foods Smile Cards:

All grade 6 students have been given a Thrifty Foods Smile Card to help
with PAC Fund raising.  If your family is not intending to use it, please
return it to the school by dropping it into the PAC box outside the school
office.  In that way, we can re-assign it to someone else. If you would

Here is your afternoon ROMS TV News report

Today is Wedesday, January 31, and here’s the news about what’s happening at ROMS.  The weather calls for clouds, rain with a high of 7 degrees.  Where is the dry weather?  No more rain!!

We are now halfway through the school year.    Five months and it  will  be June!  Now that sounds great!

 

Welcome back from a long weekend for students as teachers were in a Pro D training session on Monday.

Did You know?

  • Canada has six time zones.

  • The longest highway in the world is the Trans-Canada Highway which is over 7,604 kilometres  in length.

  • The highest mountain in Canada is Mount Logan, Yukon Territory, 5959 metres (19,551 feet).

Intra murals:     Intra murals are on again this week!   Make sure you and your class gets signed up and participates.  

Open House:  Royal Oak is hosting our open house this tomorrow.    Be sure your classroom and desk is clean and there is no straps hanging out of your locker.  We want to present our school the best we can.

Recycling:    Be sure to empty your  blue paper recycling  recycle tower by tomorrow ready for our open house.

Ask your teacher:  Who was selected as the MVP for the NHL All Star game.. If you can not get the answer, do an Internet search to find out.   

Olympic News:

This is the first time South Korea has hosted the Winter Olympics. The 1988 Summer Olympics were held in Seoul, South Korea.

The estimated cost of the Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics is $10 billion, five times less than the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
